Il Premio Oscar Philip Seymour Hoffman interpreta un leader carismatico, Lancaster Dodd, impegnato nella fondazione di un'organizzazione di stampo religioso. Dodd recluta Freddie, un giovane sbandato, come suo braccio destro.
